Cancer Research UK - Implementing a Replacement e-Recruitment Platform

Background

Cancer Research UK pioneers life-saving research to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.  As a leading, award winning employer and graduate recruiter Cancer Research UK are the employer of choice for candidates seeking a rewarding and fulfilling career in the charity sector.

With over 1,300 vacancies advertised and 37,000 applications received annually Cancer Research UK need to be able to manage the end-to-end recruitment process in the most effective way possible from vacancy creation through to candidate offer and on boarding.

What we did

Having run an exhaustive vendor selection process to select a replacement for their previous multiple e-recruitment platforms that were failing to meet the growing needs of the business, IZAAC Consulting were engaged by Cancer Research UK to ensure that the implementation of their chosen solution was delivered within time, cost and budget constraints.  In particular the time frame to implementation was critical due to the end date of commercial agreements with the previous solution provider and the impending autumn peak recruitment period.

At the outset IZAAC Consulting worked with the Cancer Research UK team and their chosen supplier World Careers Network to map the business processes against the functionality within the WCN solution defining the configuration required as well as identifying functional gaps that may have required changes to business processes or bespoke development.

With definition workshops completed and gaps identified, IZAAC's consultant led the team through the detailed design stage to document the solution configuration and business process changes required.  At the same time he established the strategy and approach for business change including communications and training, as well as technical delivery in areas such as testing, deployment cutover and ongoing support.

Once the technical build and configuration stage was under way we then turned our focus to working with CRUK's business and technical teams to define testing scenarios, creating detailed system and user acceptance test scripts whilst also guiding the in-house business change team on execution against the strategy and approach defined to ensure high levels of stakeholder engagement were maintained across the business.

With solution delivery upon us, we maintained the focus of the testing and delivery teams throughout the extensive and complex test and fix cycles, prioritising and tracking defects for resolution, escalating within the supplier where necessary, rapidly reaching a point where training materials could be completed and final logistics for user training and system migration could take place.

Once live, a staggered migration of users and live vacancies across the organisation took place, culminating in the launch of the autumn graduate recruitment programme with its significant volume of applications, concentrated into a very short space of time.

The result

With IZAAC Consulting leading the project, CRUK successfully consolidated multiple e-recruitment solutions onto a single platform, delivering a revitalised e-recruitment process for the charity in less than 5 months from the point of contract signature.

As a result CRUK were afforded sufficient time for the new solution to become established and for users to become familiar with processes prior to their peak autumn recruitment period and in particular their heavily over-subscribed graduate recruitment programme.
