Cancer Research UK - Delivering a Retail Gift Aid and EPOS Solution…….Fast!

Background

Cancer Research UK pioneers life-saving research to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.  With around 560 stores across the UK they are one of the largest charity retailers on the high street.

IZAAC consulting were engaged by CRUK to develop the business case for the introduction of EPOS and Retail Gift Aid, defining the costs and benefits associated with the programme to successfully obtain buy-in across the charity for the significant investment required.

What we did

With senior sponsorship in place, we set about working closely with the CRUK team to run a vendor selection process, bringing our knowledge from other organisations to define the selection strategy, identify relevant vendors and help evaluate them against stringent selection criteria at each stage of the process.

Once the preferred vendor was identified, using our extensive experience of store systems from other retail businesses we shaped the solution through discovery workshops whilst simultaneously negotiating highly favourable commercial terms, securing maximum value for the charity and ensuring the best possible use of supporter funds.

From the outset it was important that the programme was set up for success particularly given the significant benefits at stake, we therefore considered carefully the approach to managing change across stores, recommending a multi-phased approach to prioritise delivery of the biggest benefits first.  To support this, a cross-functional programme team made up of CRUK staff and third parties was established to support all elements of change including technology, store fit, communications and training.

With IZAAC's consultant leading the programme, CRUK rapidly navigated the detailed design, development and test phases, resulting in an early pilot from which to evaluate the success of approaches to communications, training, store preparation, technology deployment and operations.  This success fuelled an ambitious go-live schedule with all stores outside of London successfully rolled out ahead of Christmas trading followed by London stores early in the New Year, generating significant gift aid income for the charity from donated stock.

In parallel to London stores going live, IZAAC Consulting managed the deployment of stock management functionality helping CRUK improve visibility and management of new goods within their supply chain.

The result

Working with IZAAC Consulting, CRUK successfully achieved a green field EPOS and Retail Gift Aid deployment to all 560 stores in less than 9 months from signing contracts, which with high levels of user adoption have helped CRUK consistently meet and exceed gift aid income targets originally envisaged, so funding further life-saving research.
